Essential Responsibilities of the Superintendent:
- Oversee all operations of the Santa Barbara School Districts, including educational programs and services, schools,
research and evaluation, business services, personnel services, facilities, and special projects.
- Supervise district office management staff who are responsible for the major functions and departments in the districts.
- Assess the needs of the districts and develop strategies for meeting those needs.
- In conjunction with the Board of Education, develop short- and long-term goals.
- Ensure that district actions and activities are fully compliant with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
- Keep the board informed on issues, needs, operations and status of the schools.
- Prepare board agendas and manage details relating to board meetings.
- Recommend to the board the development of new policies and revisions of existing policies as necessary.
- Provide the board and public with periodic reports about the structure and progress of programs throughout the
district.
- Report regularly to the board as to the instructional strategies being implemented to achieve the districts educational
vision for all students.
- Maintain open and effective communication with administrators, certificated staff, and classified staff.
- Communicate all personnel actions of the board to employees and relay communications from employees to the board
- Public outreach and communication
- Keep the board informed of issues in negotiations and the progress of negotiations.
- Provide for the evaluation of all employees by their supervisors on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Insure that the districts meet state and federal requirements for special education students.
- Visit schools regularly.
- Make recommendations regarding district properties/facilities based on current need and predictions of future needs.
- Represent and advocate for the district and youth with city, county, and state governments.
- Participate in appropriate community organizations and activities to promote the districts’ vision and the
attainment of the districts’ goals.
- Work closely with the media.
