San Marcos High School Principal

Assignment
Under the supervision of the superintendent, the principal will be responsible for administering the educational program of the school under the California Education Code, the Administrative Code of California, and the policies and regulations of the Santa Barbara High School District. San Marcos moved from a traditional six-period day to a block schedule where students take three 90-minute classes a day with the option of a fourth class. Students may thus complete 16 classes a year instead of the traditional 12.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as administrative and instructional leader of the school.
- Provides for continuous supervision and evaluation of the instructional program for the students.
- Interprets the school’s programs to the community served by the school.
- Assumes responsibility during school hours for the health, safety, welfare, and morale of all personnel (students and employees) assigned to the school.
- Consults with pupils, parents, teachers, and staff members in developing and maintaining the orderly operation of the school.
- Evaluates classroom instruction for its appropriateness to learning theory and achievement of adopted objectives.
- Cooperates with the superintendent in improving the educational content of classes and in providing staff planning and inservice education for teachers.
- Cooperates with the division of business services in the development of annual budget requirements.
- Cooperates with the division of personnel services in the recruitment, assignment, evaluation, and termination of certificated and classified employees as conditions require.
- Monitors and maintains the physical facility and grounds.
- Designs and implements appropriate parent involvement and parent education programs including effective involvement of advisory committees and school site councils.
- Takes the leadership in establishing and prioritizing school goals and objectives in conjunction with all staff, parents, and the community.
The principal is to be a strong instructional leader, committed to the district’s mission. He or she is expected to make recommendations to improve the educational program and the support functions of the district; to keep abreast of current education theory and practice; to maintain active contact with local, state, and national professional organizations. The principal also performs other duties as assigned by the superintendent.
Employment Standards
Successful candidates will have:
A valid California credential authorizing service as a secondary school administrator, a strong background of successful teaching experience, a broad background in secondary curriculum, and the personal qualities required for leadership, teamwork, and the development of good staff morale. Preference will be given to applicants fluent in Spanish.
Knowledge of: principles, techniques, strategies, goals, and objectives of a public secondary school level of education; procedures, methods, and techniques of organization, management, and supervision of a secondary school; curriculum development processes; assessment, and evaluation techniques for evaluating program activity and personnel performance effectiveness.
Ability to: successfully employ the principles of learning, diagnostic prescriptive instruction procedures, and behavior modification methods; apply effective school techniques, mastery teaching, and student-family dynamics and counseling skills; make effective decisions based on practical judgments and management abilities; take a deep interest in, belief in, and zeal for, education as an individual community benefit; exercise open-mindedness, fairness, firmness in decision-making, and poise in personnel relations; demonstrate leadership for those assigned to the school; demonstrate concern for strengthening educational procedures so as to provide all students with equal opportunities in preparation for adult life.
Salary and Benefits
The salary is an eight-step range, currently $109,781 » $122,182 on the management schedule for a 225-day contract, paid over twelve months.
