April 17, 2002 Minutes

  1. Call to Order
    Authorized by the Board of Education, the Secondary District Bond Oversight Committee met at the Santa Barbara School Districts’ Administration Center, 720 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA.

    Committee members present: Dr. Deborah Flores, superintendent; Mike Calhoun, parent, DPHS; Moe Claydon, assistant principal, SMHS; Tomaso Falzone, community member; Gerrie Fausett, principal, Santa Barbara JHS; Ann Fischer, teacher, La Cumbre MS; Michael Gonzalez, principal, La Cumbre MS; Robert Gonzalez, director, Facilities and Operations; Nancy Harter, member, Board of Education; David Hetyonk, project manager; John Holehouse, community member; Barbara Keyani, coordinator, Special Projects and Communication; Ramona Marten, teacher, La Colina JHS; Gary Moon, architect, tBP Architects; David Ortiz, principal, La Colina JHS; Loretta Reynolds, parent, La Colina JHS; Fred Razo, assistant principal, SBHS; J.R. Richards, principal, SBHS; Kris Robertson, principal, GVJHS; Paul Serka, principal, SMHS; Matt Sommers, architect, tBP Architects; Larry Vranish, teacher, DPHS; and Joe Wilcox, architect, KBZ Architects.

    Others in attendance: Clark Sayre, teacher, DPHS and four students from DPHS (Lani Ballonoff, Katie McNiff; Eric Plumb and Matt Pies).

    Larry Vranish called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m., followed by the pledge of allegiance. He asked for public comments. There were none.

  2. Review of January 16, 2002 and March 20, 2002 Minutes
    Larry Vranish asked for comments about the January 16, 2002 minutes. Loretta Reynolds stated Mr. Bradley’s first name is Chris instead of Peter. A motion to approve the minutes as corrected was made by Paul Serka, seconded by J.R. Richards, and approved unanimously. A motion to approve the March 20, 2002 minutes as presented was made by J.R. Richards, seconded by Michael Gonzalez, and approved unanimously.

  3. Financial Report
    Robert Gonzalez distributed the April 17, 2002 Measure V Bond Financial Report. He reported that the costs included: Department of State Architect (DSA) fee checks. He also reported that the La Colina and GVJHS’s DSA plan fee checks were corrected on the financial report from the prior month. Gerrie Fausett stated that the SBJHS financial report was not included. Mr. Gonzalez stated that he would send the SBJHS financial report to the committee.

  4. Reports About the Dos Pueblos Auditorium and San Marcos Auditorium
    Larry Vranish reminded the committee that Dos Pueblos High School and San Marcos High School would have presentations on their auditoriums at the April 17, 2002 Bond Oversight Committee meeting. He introduced Clark Sayre, DPHS performing arts teacher, who gave the presentation about the DPHS auditorium along with four of his students. They reviewed their trip to Northwood High School in Irvine, California and the how the DPHS auditorium would be similar to that one

    Robert Gonzalez introduced Gary Moon and Matthew Sommers, architects from tBP Architecture, who gave a presentation on the plans for the new DPHS auditorium

    Joe Wilcox of KBZ Architect provided a presentation on the SMHS auditorium remodel.

  5. Site Reports/Project Updates
    La Colina Junior High School: Principal David Ortiz reported on the modernization plans for the library. Goleta Valley Junior High School: Principal Kris Robertson reported that the cafeteria’s preliminary design was completed and the landscaping plans were being done. La Cumbre Middle School: Principal Michael Gonzalez stated that because of budget constraints, they would not be able to build a synthetic track, but an asphalt track would be installed. Santa Barbara High School: Principal J.R. Richards stated that everyone was working hard on the planning for the new pool.

  6. Public Relations Update
    Barbara Keyani reported that the aerial maps showing the locations and type of work to be performed were on the website. She also presented two versions of board signage, which could be in sign or banner form. Costs of wooden signs that are 4’ x 8’ in size are estimated at $425 to $450 each without installation. Costs for banners will run approximately $175. The decision was made by the committee to allow each school to decide what signage would be appropriate for their site. Dos Pueblos High School has already requested the signs.

  7. New Business
    Dr. Flores reported that the May 15, 2002 Secondary District Bond Oversight Committee meeting needed to be rescheduled as that is the same night as the Districts’ Employee Appreciation Day event at Borders. The committee decided to hold the next meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2002. Tomaso Falzone asked if there was a schedule for quick start projects for this summer. This will be put on as an item on the agenda for the May meeting.

    The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
