In 1999, Goleta Valley Junior High was named a California Distinguished School. Guided by a Vision Statement and a list of Student Expectations, Goleta Valley Junior High students and staff share a commitment to the highest standards for academic excellence. Rewarding student achievement is a critical component of the school’s educational program. The student recognition program singles out high achieving children every Friday for perfect attendance; reading and reporting on books; improvement in grades, attitude, being helpful, and demonstrating outstanding citizenship.
Goleta Valley Junior High School’s current enrollment is 880 students. Santa Barbara Charter School, serving 203 students, is presently housed on the Goleta Valley Junior High School campus.
Goleta Valley Junior High was the first secondary school in the burgeoning Goleta Valley when it was constructed in 1964. It was constructed on a 23.02-acre site. During the years since its construction, 17 portables have been added to the site. Five of these portables are over 25 years old and in need of immediate replacement.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND MODERNIZATION NEEDS
A Master Plan Committee met with architects to assess facilities and determine site needs, including:
- install a new heating/ventilating/cooling system;
- repair structural defects;
- upgrade electrical to accommodate technology;
- lighting, new stage, new carpeting, new seats in the auditorium;
- replace intercom consoles;
- replace storm drain and sewers;
- replace fire alarm system;
- repair clocks;
- landscape school;
- paint school;
- upgrade the cafeteria;
- expand eating area for students;
- eliminate 17 portable classrooms;
- convert an existing room to a computer lab and technology department;
- convert boiler rooms to text and instructional materials workrooms;
- upgrade the music room;
- upgrade the physical education locker rooms;
- construct four new science labs;
- construct a permanent disaster supplies building;
- build a covered outdoor eating area;
- construct a storage area for the auditorium.
