La Colina Junior High School
(Established in 1959)
In 1999, La Colina Junior High School was named a California Distinguished School. La Colina strives to promote all students to high school by the end of the eighth grade. Those who fail to meet District requirements must complete courses in summer school before they can transfer. All programs, including the Gifted and Talented Education program and special education, are continually evaluated to assure they are meeting student needs.
La Colina has both permanent and portable classrooms, an auditorium, library, and cafeteria that are frequently used by parents and the community on evenings and weekends. A public elementary school (Open Alternative School), a small continuation high school program (Las Alturas), and the Expeditionary Learning Academy (an alternative junior high) use part of the campus during the day.
La Colina was constructed in 1959 on a 29-acre site. During the years since its construction, eight portables have been added to the site to accommodate an increase in enrollment to 754 students. Six of these portables are over 25 years old and in need of immediate replacement.
La Colina Junior High School, serves students from
- Foothill Elementary School
- Hollister Elementary School
- Hope Elementary School
- Monte Vista Elementary School
- Mountain View Elementary School
- Vieja Valley Elementary School
La Colina Junior High School feeds primarily into San Marcos High School (some students attend Santa Barbara High School).
