In 1994, San Marcos High was named a California Distinguished High School. San Marcos High School currently serves an enrollment of 2,061 students. The school’s varied curriculum offers over 130 academic and elective courses. Approximately 80% of San Marcos students go on to higher education, with 35% going directly to four-year colleges and universities and 45% attending two-year community colleges. Thirty-one percent of the graduating class of 1997-98 completed UC entrance requirements.
San Marcos was constructed in 1958 on a 44.40-acre site. During the years since its construction, 20 portables have been added to the site. Eleven of these portables are over 25 years old and in need of immediate replacement.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND MODERNIZATION NEEDS
A Master Plan Committee met with architects to assess facilities and determine site needs, including:
- remodel classrooms;
- replace heating system and add air conditioning where necessary for computers;
- replace entire clock and bell system;
- replace existing fire alarm with smoke detector and heat sensor system;
- improve data system in all classrooms;
- rewire all rooms and breaker boxes to accommodate 4 to 6 computers per room;
- rewire to improve cable TV in all rooms;
- replace high voltage lines as needed;
- build new classrooms to replace portables;
- remodel or rebuild new gym to seat 1,400 & multipurpose room, weight room and wrestling room;
- construct drop-off, pick-up area in front lot;
- install a security system to prevent vandalism;
- build new music/performing arts wing;
- build handicap accessible restrooms in stadium;
- build new CAD/CAM lab and room;
- remodel entire art wing (3 rooms);
- put roof gutters on all buildings and connect to area drains;
- provide adequate drainage between all buildings and outside banks to prevent erosion;
- remodel auditorium, provide handicap access, new seats, lift for stage, orchestra pit;
- remodel girl’s locker room;
- remodel all restrooms;
- repair and widen entry walks at front of school and “B” lot;
- resurface track and convert to 400 meter track;
- add restrooms for female staff;
- convert pool to all deep;
- re-landscape campus;
- resurface and rebuild all asphalt areas and roads;
- repair all roofs and treat for termites;
- provide handicap access to the campus;
- remodel industrial arts rooms, graphics and woodshop;
- paint and remodel cafeteria;
- replace roof on press box;
- upgrade science storage areas.
