On Friday, October 1, 1999, Delaine Eastin, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will visit two schools in the Santa Barbara High School District. She will tour Santa Barbara High’s Multimedia Arts and Design Academy prior to participating in a lunchtime meeting with a group of students. Superintendent Eastin will then travel to Goleta Valley Junior High, where she will visit several classrooms.
Delaine
Eastin, a graduate of the University of California-Santa Barbara, began her current post as State Superintendent of
Public Instruction on November 8, 1994. She is the highest ranking official in California’s elementary and secondary
public school system and the first woman to be elected State Superintendent. She serves as Executive Officer and Secretary
of the State Board of Education and as the Director of the California Department of Education. Eastin is a member of
the Regents of the University of California and a Trustee of the California State Universities.
Superintendent Eastin’s background includes a seven-year career in teaching and eight years of service in the State Assembly, where she chaired the Assembly Committee on Education. At the time, she represented the 20th District (which includes Fremont, Milpitas, Newark, Santa Clara, Pleasanton, and parts of San Jose) in the State Assembly.
There are many needs faced by our schools and not enough resources to do all the things that the Santa Barbara School Districts would like to do. The Districts are always appreciative when community members and businesses step forward to make a difference by providing their expertise, goods, services, and other resources.
On Wednesday, September 22nd, Lanny Ebenstein was recognized by the Board of Education for his role in beautifying Santa Barbara High School.
Ebenstein, a former member of the Board of Education, has been a driving force in creating a warm, and welcoming climate for students, staff, and visitors. Last year, he was part of a group of Alumni Association members who lent their support to refurbishing the Santa Barbara High quad area, located near the cafeteria. Today, students and staff enjoy lunch in the quad’s beautiful grassy area. The quad is now a campus focal point.
Several months ago, when parents and alumni talked about ways to improve the parking area between the school’s Career Center and the Main Building, Ebenstein stepped up to the plate. He brought in professional landscapers, many of them were former Dons, to transform the parking area into an interior courtyard of lawn and soon-to-be-added shrubs.
The generosity of Lanny Ebenstein – and the Ebenstein family – will be appreciated by students and staff for years to come.
On Wednesday, September 22nd, Santa Barbara High School parents will learn more about what is taking place in their child’s classrooms when they attend Back to School Night.
Back to School Night activities begin prior to the classroom visits:
At 7:00 p.m., with their student’s schedule in hand (and a campus map to guide them), hundreds of parents will make their way to their child’s first-period classroom. After a 10-minute visit, where they meet the teacher and learn about class expectations and curriculum, they move on to the next class. By evening’s end, parents will have covered their student’s six periods of instruction.
In an effort to attract a greater number of Hispanic parents to school events such as Back To School Night, SBHS teacher Martha Acevedo is serving as a part-time community liaison, serving the Limited English Proficient (LEP) community. With the onset of the new school year, Ms. Acevedo began working closely with LEP students and their parents, helping to strengthen the connection between home and school.
Santa Barbara High School is located at 700 East Anapamu Street.
