Santa Barbara Community Academy Students Start School with Costco-Provided Backpacks
On Friday morning, August 10, 2007, the energy and decibel levels were high when more than 180 third-, fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders at the Santa Barbara Community Academy learned that they were recipients of brand new backpacks, provided by Costco Wholesale in Goleta.
Costco marketing representatives Berta Cifuentes and Miriam Williams joined principal Amy Alzina in handing out the green and black backpacks, which contained a pencil bag, eraser, glue stick, scissors, folders, and other school supplies.
The Costco Fresh Start Backpack Program has been in place for a number of years. According to Kent Wells, marketing/membership manager at the Goleta store, “ Costco is committed to giving back to the communities where it conducts business. Through the Costco Fresh Start Backpack Program, backpacks along with supplies are distributed to children in grades 1-6 who would otherwise be unable to purchase a backpack.”
