Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Expands Programs for Youth
The city’s parks and recreation program has expanded its youth programs:
- The job apprentice program seeks to hire targeted youth to fill 37 opportunities during the summer months (some of the positions will continue into the school year).
- The Summer Fun Drop-In Recreation Program at Harding, Franklin, and McKinley served 396 children from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and had a full range of travel and hands-on activities.
- The city’s summer handball league clinic served 91 children at Franklin School and 100 at the Westside Boys & Girls Club and concluded with a citywide tournament, complete with prize money.
- Beginning this fall, all elementary school sports leagues will be free this year.
- The junior high school afterschool sports program, which served 900 children in 2006-07, is expected to double in 2007-08.
