Santa Barbara High School Students Meet Dr. Jane Goodall

Several Santa Barbara High School Virtual Enterprise students were among 80 Santa Barbara Service Learning Initiative teachers, students, and partners that traveled to Griffith Park in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 23, 2007, to participate in Roots & Shoots Day of Peace. Roots & Shoots is a program of the Jane Goodall Institute. The gathering brought thousands of Roots & Shoots members from across the globe together to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace. Dr. Goodall encouraged students to reduce their “footprint” on the earth, protect the environment, and work toward creating a peaceful world.

Santa Barbara High School students Jose Lobato, Dee Dee Wei, Karen Martinez, Mayra Ponce, Catherine Gonzalez and teacher Lee Ann Knodel were thrilled and honored to meet world-renowned biologist, primatologist, and conservationist Dr. Goodall. She signed the students’ Eco-cell collection box and talked with them about their Eco-cell cell phone recycling program, battery recycling program, and VITA service learning projects.

The Santa Barbara Service Learning group attended the Giant Peace Dove parade, where Dr. Goodall spoke. At the end of the day, the Virtual Enterprise class received a signed certificate of appreciation from the Goodall Institute.

Virtual Enterprise is a program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office that uses the service learning methodology. That methodology links required curriculum to service.
