Veterans Day Ceremonies in the Santa Barbara School Districts
In the Santa Barbara School Districts, all schools and district office will be closed on Monday, November 12 for Veterans Day. Following are Veterans Day activities scheduled for today and tomorrow.
Santa Barbara High School
At 11:30 a.m., on Friday, November 9, 2007, Santa Barbara High School will hold its annual vigil at the commemorative rock next to the JR Richards Gymnasium. Former student Sammy Campa, who served in Iraq, will address the crowd.
In the main hallway, pictures of approximately 70 young Dons who served and died in World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War will be on display through Friday, November 16, 2007.
San Marcos High School
San Marcos High School will hold its second annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Valley Stadium on Friday, November 9 at 8:45am.
As a San Marcos graduate, Vietnam era veteran, and father of an active duty soldier who has served two tours of duty in Iraq, Assistant Principal Dave Scott started this ceremony last year in order to give students an insight as to why they were getting a day off of school
Primarily social studies and English classes will attend the ceremony and those teachers plan to incorporate the Veterans Day ceremony into their lesson plans.
La Colina Junior High School
Today, November 8, La Colina Junior High will hold a 12:57-1:08 p.m. reading break where teachers will read the “Origins of Veterans Day” and “The difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day.” If time permits, teachers will read “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.”
On Friday morning, November 9, the ASB officer Jocelyn Flattery will lead the school in the flag salute, followed by a statement about Veterans Day. At lunchtime, in near the flagpole, students can fill out a sticker in honor or in memory of a friend or family who is a veteran. During the 12:47-1:108 p.m. reading break, two video clips on Veterans Day will be shown school-wide on every classroom television.
Adams Elementary School
Adams Elementary School will hold its annual Veterans Day assembly on Friday, November 9. At 9:30 a.m. in auditorium, several military veterans will share their experiences with students. Adams Elementary School is located at 2702 Las Positas Road, Santa Barbara (next to the Earl Warren Showgrounds).
