At 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, Dos Pueblos High School principal Mark Swanitz will welcome the public to the opening of the new Dos Pueblos High School performing arts center. The event will begin with performances by students in the instrumental, vocal, and theater arts programs led by Les Rose, Brian Slotnick-Lastrico, and Clark Sayre, respectively. The program will include remarks by Superintendent Brian Sarvis, Board President Nancy Harter, Facilities Director David Hetyonk, Project Manager Carl Mayrose, State Assemblymember Pedro Nava, senior Blake Bainou, and the instrumental, vocal, and performing arts teachers. The dedication celebrates a state-of-the-art facility for stellar student talent.
Dos Pueblos High School was built in 1966 but because of insufficient funds, the planned theater and stadium were not built. It was hoped that both projects would be constructed as soon as funds became available. With the passage of the $67 million Measure V general obligation bond in 2000, the theater project has come to fruition, 41 years after the school was built.
Dos Pueblos High School performing arts students will no longer perform in a 100-seat converted classroom, renamed the Little Theater. The new performing arts theater includes a 750-seat theater, sunken orchestra pit, ticket office, and a control room; drama classroom; choral classroom with two individual choral practice rooms; property room; and construction room for scenery construction.
Once the blue and gold ribbon is ceremoniously cut, visitors will be invited to tour the facility.
Dos Pueblos High School is located at 7266 Alameda Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA 93117.
