City Landmarks
The Santa Barbara School Districts have four school sites that are city landmarks:
- Santa Barbara High School (main building and Figueroa Street ticket booth; city resolution adopted on November 8, 2005);
- McKinley Elementary School (main building, steps, and portion of the school grounds; city resolution adopted July 20, 1993)
- La Cumbre Junior High School (city resolution adopted March 25, 1986)
- Santa Barbara Junior High School (main building; city resolution adopted March 26, 1985).
The steps in having a school building(s) designated as a city landmark are:
- Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) may contact the district OR the board of education may adoption of a resolution requesting landmark status to initiate HLC action.
- If HLC decides to proceed, it may adopt of a resolution of intent to consider recommending designation as a landmark.
- HLC holds a public hearing on commission staff research and recommendations.
- If HLC decides to proceed, it adopts a resolution recommending landmark status to the city council.
- The final step is the adoption of a resolution by city council designating the site or buildings as a city landmark.
Even after having a site designated as a city landmark, the board of education retains final authority over district property.
