Channel 21 to Air Milken Foundation Announcement of Marilyn Garza’s Selection as Milken National Educator Award Recipient
Last November 1, Santa Barbara Junior High School eighth-grade physical science teacher Marilyn Garza was surprised at a school-wide assembly when it was announced that she was the recipient of a 2007 California Milken National Educator Award, which has a cash prize of $25,000. It was a light-hearted, engaging event.
SB Channels, SBTV 21, will begin airing the November assembly as follows:
- Monday, January 21 at Noon
- Tuesday, January 22 at 10 a.m.
- Wednesday January 23 at 8 p.m.
- Friday, January 25 at 9:30 a.m.
- Saturday, January 26 at 4 p.m.
- Sunday, January 27 at 8:30 a.m.
Marilyn Garza was one of 75 teachers and principals who were selected as recipients of the award in the fall. On February 15, Ms. Garza, and other California Milken Educators for 2007, will be honored at an awards luncheon in Santa Monica. In March, at the Milken Family Foundation National Education Conference in Los Angeles, the 2007 recipients will each receive the unrestricted financial award of $25,000.
Speakers at the school-wide assembly included Milken Family Foundation chairman and co-founder Lowell Milken, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, Milken Foundation board member (and football great) Rosey Grier, Superintendent Sarvis, and principal John Becchio.
The Milken Family Foundation was founded in 1982 and is dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 education. One of the ways the foundation works to strengthen and advance the teaching profession is by recognizing and rewarding outstanding educators.
Marilyn Garza is a 2007-08 Santa Barbara County Distinguished Educator, a category in the county’s Teacher of the Year awards program. She has been at Santa Barbara Junior High School for over a decade.
