It’s that Seuss-ical time of year again in our schools. March 3 is Read Across America Day, celebrating the legacy of Dr. Seuss, that magical master of rhyming and frivolity who has captivated children and adults of all ages.
The National Education Association promotes the celebration of Read Across America (RAAD) to support literacy in the community and emphasize the joy of reading. Students, teachers, school administrators, and community leaders will highlight the joy of reading by visiting classrooms in the Santa Barbara Elementary School District in February and March to read to students.
On February 22, Roosevelt Elementary School will host their 12th annual Read With Roosevelt-RADD celebration. Harding School will commemorate RAAD on February 29, including prizes for classroom doors that are best decorated as book covers, a pajama day, a guest appearance by the Cat in the Hat, and fun reading activities. Guests invited to read to students include the school support staff, Santa Barbara School Districts’ Superintendent Brian Sarvis, school board members, and Santa Barbara Mayor Marty Blum. Why wait? Celebrate Read Across America every day by reading to children, and asking them to read to you.
