Santa Barbara High School Students participate in Teen CERT Course
The Santa Barbara Fire Department is working with Santa Barbara High School students, training them as part of the fire department’s Teen CERT Course. Ten classes are offered every Tuesday from 2:00-4:00 pm. Attendance is mandatory at all scheduled classes in order to receive certification. Students can also receive 20 community service hours for their commitment to the program. According to Assistant Principal Dave Meister, students are going to have a part in the school’s disaster drills. The course also has many students thinking about working for the fire department, police department, or emergency services.
Class topics include fire safety and utilities shutoff, disaster medicine, triage and establishing treatment areas, public health concerns and treating injuries, search and rescue methodology, search and rescue victim removal, disaster psychology, team organization, and terrorism.
