Districts’ Students have Stellar Showing in the County Spelling Bee
Excerpt from the February 28, 2008, Santa Barbara County Education Office news release.
There was no legerdemain involved in the win of Quinn Hensley, a fifth grader at Washington Elementary School in the Santa Barbara School District, who spelled the word correctly to take top honors in the elementary division of the Santa Barbara County Spelling Bee on Thursday [February 28, 2008] in the auditorium of the Santa Barbara County Education Office.
In the secondary division, first place winner Kelvin Noronha, an eighth grader at La Colina Junior High in the Santa Barbara School District, correctly spelled cornice to take the top prize. Brenna Hensley, a seventh grader at La Colina Junior High School, took second place by spelling gyrate. Third place went to seventh grader Taylor Randall, from Open Alternative School in the Santa Barbara School District, who spelled allergy.
The two top winners in each division will proceed to the state level. The 2008 Elementary State Spelling Bee will be held May 17 at Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park. The State Junior High spelling Bee will be held May 10 at Miller Creek School in San Rafael.
Congratulations Quinn, Kelvin, Brenna, and Taylor!
