Board of Education Updates Policies and Regulations
Over the last two years, our board of education has been steadily updating different series of policies, regulations, and bylaws. The nine series are:
- Series 0000: Mission, goals, and plans
- Series 1000: Community relations
- Series 2000: Administration
- Series 3000: Business and non-instructional operations
- Series 4000: Personnel
- Series 5000: Students
- Series 6000: Instruction
- Series 7000: Facilities
- Series 9000: Bylaws of the board
At yesterday’s board meeting, the board reviewed the 3000 series on business and non-instructional operations and the 7000 series on facilities. After board comments and corrections are inserted into the policies and regulations, the series will move to second reading. Once adopted, each series will be posted on the districts’ web site.
The next series to be updated are the 4000 series on personnel, 5000 series on students, and 6000 series on instruction.
Board policies and regulations are important to school governance. They address a host of topics, such as suspension/expulsion, harassment, student safety, facilities, and student promotion/retention. Policies reference Education Code, Government Code, Public Contract Code, and provide cross-references to other policies and regulations, legal resources, and other information important to a specific policy.
Policy updates are accomplished with the assistance of California School Boards Association (CSBA). CSBA has a Policy Update Reference Manual with more than 800 sample policies, regulations, bylaws, and exhibits that serve as models which schools boards across the state use to develop their own policies and regulations.
