April 13 Screening of DON RIDERS, a Film about Santa Barbara High’s Low-Rider Bike Club
Santa Barbara High School’s cafeteria will be the site of April 13, 2008, student performances and a special screening of the DON RIDERS film, last screened at the 2008 Santa Barbara Film Festival. The 30-minute film is about a school club that teaches students how to build custom low-rider bikes. Club advisors note that the club gives students a chance to participate in a fun, creative outlet and provides a positive alternative for youth, including those at risk.
The event is free to the community. In addition to seeing the film and meeting the Don Riders, the audience will have the opportunity to watch a performance by student group Dons With Flava; meet student videographers Cody Hudgens, Megan Bolger, Ryan Reynolds, and production assistant Dylan Alexander; learn about the student-produced music for the film (performed by Notes 4 Notes); and see ten low-rider bikes.
Festivities begin at 3:00 pm with a Dons With Flava performance, welcome by Mayor Marty Blum (3:15 pm), DON RIDERS film screening (3:30 pm), followed by a question and answer period (4:00 pm).
Club advisors are Pedro Menchaca and Alejandra Gutierrez. “This event is a chance for us to thank the Fund for Santa Barbara for granting us $2,170 for our uniforms, t-shirts, tools, safety equipment, and banners. They have been a great help in keeping our club alive. The club welcomes donations as funds are needed for bikes, and field trips to major universities and sports events,” stated Ms. Gutierrez. She added, “The club was established in 2005. It helps our Latino students stay out of gangs. This showing is also an opportunity for the community to see how our Latino students are involved in different performing arts.”
Santa Barbara High School is located at 700 E. Anapamu Street. The cafeteria is located near the center of campus, next to the band room.
