Open Alternative School Celebrates Earth Day Today
Open Alternative School is celebrating Earth Day today, April 18, with an annual day n the park. The entire school, grades K-8, isat Scofield Park, engaging in a series of activities for learning about the out-of-doors and specifically the chaparral environment of the Rattlesnake Canyon area. Students are taking classes on art, hiking, learning names of flowers and bushes, mapping, identifying mammal skulls, and geocaching (a treasure hunting game using a GPS to hide and seek) as they explore and appreciate the area’s natural environment.
One of the core values of Open Alternative School is that all students engage in environmental education, learning about the natural world and to be good stewards of the earth. In addition to a day in the park, every class engages in science studies and field trips, including camping trips, that support this learning and service projects that care for the earth.
