La Cuesta/Museum Collaboration on Display at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art

One example of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s collaboration with local schools is evident in a display that is currently visible in the museum’s State Street window. IDENTITIES is a museum exhibition currently on display that showcases its collection of contemporary art from various parts of the world, “exploring the theme of identity as both a collective consciousness and individual reflection” in a variety of media.

Alison Saar’s Terra Firma sculpture, figures that reflect her personal view of racial identity, are in the exhibition. They are the inspiration for works created by students from the four La Cuesta Continuation High School campuses as part of the La Cuesta/Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) collaborative. Over a two-month period, SBMA teacher Tina Villadolid traveled to the four campuses each week to work with students in creating their own terra cotta sculptures.

Forty La Cuesta Continuation High School student sculptures will be on display through Tuesday, May 27, 2008.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is located at 1130 State Street.
