Three Dos Pueblos HighSchool students competed Saturday in the national qualifying Yau High School Mathematics Awards competition in San Gabriel, California. Under the mentorship of a USCB professor, Angela Dai, Caroline Kim, and John Kim presented their own original research in the field of linear algebra. These outstanding math students won the national qualifying competition. They will be heading to Beijing, China for the October 24, 2008 international competition. Congratulations Angela, Caroline, and John!
According to the Yau High School Mathematics Awards (YHMA) web site, YHMA is funded by the John Templeton Foundation. YHMA was established to encourage high school students to participate in project-based competition in mathematical sciences. The areas of student research must be in mathematical sciences and their applications, such as basic research in algebra, analysis, geometry, probability, or statistics; engineering applications such as computing, internet, information and digital technology; commercial applications such as economics, finance, logistics, and management; scientific applications such as medicine, physics, chemistry, biology; or innovation designs, such as image and visualizations, puzzles, or algorithms.
