Wednesday, October 8 is Walk to School Day. Participating in this year’s walk will be students at San Marcos High, Goleta Valley Junior High, La Colina Junior High, La Cumbre Junior High, and Santa Barbara Junior High.
According to Safe Routes to School, the event organizer, local students join walkers in all 50 states and 42 countries who want to call attention to creating safer routes for walking and bicycling and focus on the importance of increased daily exercise and time outside for youth, safety, reducing traffic congestion and environmental pollution.
Safe Routes to School suggests several measures parents can take to support the event. For example, parents are encouraged to check the safety of the walk between home and school, to encourage their child to walk with a friend or take the bus, carpool, drive slowly and be alert for walkers and bikers, and/or drop their student off a few blocks from school so they can walk the rest of the way.
