Student Mock Election at La Cumbre Junior High School
La Cumbre Junior High School will participate in the National Student Mock Election on Thursday,
October 30, 2008. The school registered with the Mock Election program and received sufficient
ballots and voting guides for each student. In preparation for the election, the following activities
are taking place:
- The 8th grade Core Knowledge GATE class teamed up with the Video Production class to provide
several video clips about various state and local propositions, as well as the presidential candidates.
The videos will air on Wednesday, October 29, in the first 10 minutes of each period.
- English/Social Studies teachers will use the Easy Voter Guide materials to practice
the State Standards for reading informational materials, while preparing students for the election
issues.
- The eighth grade GATE social studies classes will participate in a mock debate on Tuesday,
October 28, discussing three issues: health care, the war in Iraq, and the energy crisis. The
debate will air for all staff and students on Thursday morning, before students vote.
- Voting will take place in the school library, where librarian Steve Sterling created a “Poll” location
with mini booths to ensure privacy. Students will go with their English classes to vote.
After the ballots are cast, Leadership students will count the votes and fax in the results to the
Secretary of State. Students will be able to see how middle and high school students across the country
voted in this historic election.
