The Santa Barbara County Education Office sponsored Care and Share grants for third-grade classes. The purpose of the grants is to teach the concept of philanthropy.
Four Adams Elementary School’s third grade teachers worked together and jointly wrote grants of $250 for each class. According to teacher Jodi Miles, “We will use $50.00 per class for the field trip costs, then the remaining $200 for each third-grade class will be donated to the Unity Shoppe.” She continued, “Yesterday two third-grade classes took a field trip to the Unity Shoppe so that students would connect the money with real services and a local organization.” Teachers Jodi Miles and Yoli Hopkins along with approximately 40 students toured the Unity Shoppe. On Thursday, teachers Carlos Ojeda and Cathy Escobar will take their respective third-grade classes.
The field trip linked the children back to their recent school-wide food drive for Unity Shoppe. According to Mrs. Miles, the experience is intended to involve the entire school during the Thanksgiving season and hopefully carry on a tradition of food donations to support the local community.
The opportunity for student learning continues after the Unite Shoppe tour when students reflect and then write about both parts of the project, how they feel about it, and how caring and sharing supports our community.
