Time to register for school year 2009-10

The Santa Barbara School Districts’ early enrollment period for school year 2009-10 is underway and will continue through February 27.

Santa Barbara Elementary School District

At the elementary level, parents of incoming kindergartners and parents of new students in grades 1-6 are encouraged to contact schools in the Santa Barbara Elementary School District for registration information, tours, and other events that schools may be holding. In addition to neighborhood schools, defined by specific geographic attendance boundaries, the district has schools of choice, which do not have specific attendance boundaries. Two schools in the elementary district, Santa Barbara Community Academy and Cleveland, are year round schools. The elementary district also includes three charter schools: Peabody, Santa Barbara, and Cesar Chavez charter schools. The newest addition to the lineup is Home School Santa Barbara, a unique home/school collaborative. Prospective parents are encouraged to contact the school for registration information and find out about school tours as well as the opportunities for parent involvement:

Associate Superintendent Robin Sawaske said, “It’s important to enroll your child now for the 2009-2010 school year. This not only helps the school and district in planning programs and hiring appropriate staff, it supports your child in getting prepared to start school. When a young student knows which school he/she will be attending, it helps create a sense of security. Children need to feel comfortable and welcome in a new environment to best support their learning.”

Ms. Sawaske continued, “There are limited available spaces for students who wish to transfer to a school that is not their attendance area school. Students who apply during this first enrollment period will have a better chance of having their transfer applications approved for the school of their choice.”

Santa Barbara High School District

In the Santa Barbara High School District, which serves students in grades 7-12, open houses are now underway at all junior high and high school campuses:
