Santa Barbara High School’s Virtual Enterprise class, part of the Santa Barbara County Education Office’s Regional Occupational Program, is a simulated business class designed to provide students with experience in areas such as market research, advertising, buying and selling products and services, accounting, and income tax preparation. The skill set serves students well when it is time to apply for college scholarships.
Colette Hadley, Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara’s executive director, reports, “Students in the Virtual Enterprise class at Santa Barbara High School have historically done very well when applying for scholarship support. In 2008, 91 percent of the students in the class who applied to the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara were offered a scholarship award. Overall, undergraduate students who applied to the Scholarship Foundation in 2008 were awarded at a rate of 64 percent.”
