Following a city environmental services school-by-school assessment of district recycling efforts, the eye-opening information of how much waste was being recycled set efforts in motion to improve the recycling throughout the district.
Based on information for district schools within the city’s boundaries, five schools passed the 50 percent recycling mark and two of them, Harding and Peabody, surpassed the 70 percent recycling mark:
The goal in 2009-10, as reflected in the Fiscal Solvency Plan currently under consideration by the board, is for sites to reach a 66 percent recycling goal. A 66 percent recycling level would result in a $65,801 savings in waste collection services and be a positive contribution to the environment.
