Clarification: Santa Barbara High School’s Name Has Not Been Changed; the Board Changed the District’s Name

Today a local news publication incorrectly reported that Santa Barbara High School’s name had been changed to Santa Barbara Secondary School. However, Santa Barbara High’s name has NOT been changed. Founded in 1875, Santa Barbara High School proudly continues to carry its name, traditions, and recognition as one of the oldest high schools in California.

At last night’s meeting of the districts’ board of education, the board held a public hearing and approved (vote 5:0) Resolution 09/10-01 to change the name of the Santa Barbara High School District to Santa Barbara Secondary School District. The name change was made to reflect the fact that the secondary district serves four junior high schools (Goleta Valley Junior High, La Colina Junior High, La Cumbre Junior High, and Santa Barbara Junior High) as well as four high schools (Santa Barbara High School, Dos Pueblos High School, San Marcos High School, and La Cuesta Continuation High School).
