Safe Routes to School’s Walk and Roll

A message from Kim Stanley-Zimmerman, Safe Routes to School coordinator, Coaliion for Sustainable Transportation

The Safe Routes to School program is off to a great start for the 2009-10 school year! In addition to our pedestrian and bicycle safety activities, we want each school to participate in Walk and Roll. We’ll help you organize this weekly event day that encourages children and their families to forgo the family vehicle one day per week in exchange for exercise, fresh air and some quality time on the way to school. The Safe Routes To School program aims to increase the number of children walking and biking to school, providing the opportunity for physical activity twice a day and setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. We applaud last year’s participants: Cesar Chavez Charter School, Cleveland, Harding, McKinley, Monroe, Santa Barbara Community Academy and Washington, as well as La Cumbre Junior High, La Colina Junior High, Santa Barbara Junior High, Goleta Valley Junior High and San Marcos High School.
