Kudos to Monroe’s PTA, Recipients of Governor’s $10,000 Award

Yesterday, Monroe Elementary School’ PTA won the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Spotlight Gold Medal Award for PTA of the year! The $10,000 award will be used to support physical fitness at that school site.

According to Jake Steinfeld, chairman of the Governor’ Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Monroe’ PTA was recognized for its six-year focus on fitness. The PTA has raised money for a physical fitness coach, a track team, and a drill team. Students are encouraged to be active throughout the year. “Over the last six years this parent group has helped increase the rate of students passing the state’ physical fitness exam from 6.6 percent to a district high 46.3 percent,” said Steinfeld. PTA president Cricket Wood and Monroe student Cynthia Cervantes traveled to Sacramento to receive the award.
