Process and timeline for implementation of 2010-11 budget reductions

With the state department of finance (DOF) reporting that state general fund revenues for the month of September were short of projections by $810 million, and the districts’ facing the very stark reality that both mid-year cuts and fiscal year 2010-11 cuts may be on the way, the board of education established a timeline and process for making budget reductions for the 2010-11 fiscal year.

Starting the budget reduction process early allows the board to consider, and act on reductions, prior to March of next year. With this in mind, the board has identified the following timeline for fiscal year 2010-11 budget reductions:

• First interim report and multi-year projections and establishment of budget reduction amount (December 15, 2009)
• Report on governor’s 2010-11 education budget and revision to budget reduction amount, if necessary (January 12, 2010)
• First reading of budget reduction plan (February 9, 2010)
• Second and final reading of budget reduction plan (February 23, 2010)
