Congratulations Kelly Nakashima, winner of yesterday’s Santa Barbara County Arts Commission’s Santa Barbara County Poetry Out Loud Competition. Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. According to the web site, “Recitation and performance are major new trends in poetry. There has been a recent resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of hip-hop music.”
Kelly, a freshman at Dos Pueblos High School, now advances to the state finals in Sacramento on March 15. The state winner moves on to the national level of competition Kelly was one of 22 high school students in the competition. Sarah Friedland of Dos Pueblos won the runner-up prize.
