Diversity and Equity Awareness Week

Throughout the year, diversity and equity awareness activities take place in our schools. In addition, the secondary schools participate in Diversity and Equity Awareness Week. The junior highs will hold Diversity and Equity Awareness Week beginning on February 8 and the high schools will begin their activities on February 15.

Each school creates its own schedule of events. For example, Santa Barbara High will focus on disability awareness and multicultural events, including: schoolwide viewing of segments of “Murderball,” the story of the USA parapalegic rugby team preparing to compete in national and international competitions; a campaign to end the use of the word “retarded”; February 17 lunch in the quad with music provided by artists with disabilities; February 18 “ADA Scavenger Hunt” where participating students will be given a list of Americans with Disability Act (ADA) compliant signs, bathrooms, ramps, etc. and the specifications for those areas—their job is to find the areas and measure to verify if they meet ADA requirements; and a February 19 Afro-Brazilian Dance Assembly, which will include historical explanations of the origins of each dance.
