At a recent meeting, the districts’ board of education adopted Resolution No. 2009/10-30 encouraging school participation in “2010 Census in Schools Week.” Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $400 billion in federal funds to local, state, and tribal governments each year. School districts are being encouraged to support efforts to obtain a complete and accurate census count in order to garner much-needed resources for our state.
Did you know that the individual data stays confidential for 72 years, but you can request a certificate of past censuses to use it as verification of your age, residence, or kinship? This information can help you apply for a pension, establish citizenship, or to obtain an inheritance.
In 2082 your great-grandchildren will be able to use census information to learn about the history of your family. Today your children can use the information to assist them with homework assignments.
