Excerpt from a Santa Barbara County Education Office news release
Delaney Smith, a sixth grader at Peabody Charter School in the Santa Barbara Elementary District, won first place in the county’s elementary spelling bee Wednesday morning, Feb. 24, in the auditorium of the Santa Barbara County Education Office, despite westerlies blowing in rainy weather.
Madeleine Greenbaum, an eighth grader at La Colina Junior High in the Santa Barbara Secondary District, could add to her numismatic collection by taking first place. In second place, Quinn Hensley, an eighth grader also at La Colina, could not have his success unannotated, because it is important to note that he had won the elementary division for the past three years in a row. Third place went to Josh Cabrera, a seventh grader at Santa Barbara Junior High, who correctly spelled gastroenterology.
The two top winners in each division will proceed to the state level. The 2010 State Junior High Spelling Bee will be held May 8 at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael. The 2010 Elementary State Spelling Bee will be held May 15 at Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park.
