Last week, Santa Barbara Symphony Concerts for Young People 2010 presented THE REMARKABLE FARKLE McBRIDE, written by John Lithgow. There were two performances at the Granada Theatre and each one was attend by 1,500 public and private elementary school children. Students were entranced with the experience of a live orchestra, conducted by Maestro Nir Kabaretti, and the story of a musically gifted young boy who can’t seem to decide which musical instrument he would like to pursue.
It was a wonderful event that involved current and former students. The composer was Cody Westheimer, a San Marcos High graduate and magna cum laude graduate of USC’s Thornton School of Music. Cody’s music has been featured in films and television.
Miwa Gofuku, a graduate of Santa Barbara High, was the concert’s director of operations/artistic planning. Rod Lathim, a graduate of Santa Barbara Junior and Santa Barbara High, was the stage director who brought the story to life. Logan Michaels, who played Farkle, and the narrator, Sarah Lee, are both Dos Pueblos students.
