Inspired by President Obama’s September 8, 2009, back-to-school speech
to America’s students on their need to take responsibility for themselves
and their education, fourth-grade students in Room 21, Carolyn McQuay and
Nathalie Ireland’s class, responded by sending letters to the President
with their respective goals, including “work harder,” “get
better grades on my math tests,” “listen more in class,” “finish
my work,” and “do homework every day.”
The President responded with a signed picture and letter as well as a picture postcard of the unofficial First Dog of the United State, complete with facts on Bo Obama. The children were delighted to know that Bo’s favorite food is “tomatoes – or toys” and that even though Bo is a Portuguese water dog, he doesn’t know how to swim. The President’s letter said:
Dear Students:
Thank you for your letter. Your education is important to me because the knowledge and skills you gain in school will open doors for you and help you build a brighter tomorrow for our Nation.
I am always eager to hear from young Americans, and I expect great things from your generation. My Administration is working hard to improve school buildings, put updated books and computers in classrooms, and give teachers the training and support they need to help you learn.
While we are dedicated to supporting our schools, what matters most is your commitment to your education. I encourage you to reach for your highest aspirations, because your school can only help you when you are putting your best effort into everything you do. Through academic achievement and service, you can accomplish great things and help others do the same.
Young people like you inspire me and give me great hope for the future. I wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama
