Annually, each high school sports team runs a query for current grade point average (GPA) for every member on each team’s roster. The team awards, based on a cumulative grade point average, are awarded in 22 sports. To be considered, teams must have a minimum 3.0 GPA average (4.0 scale) in all courses in the first semester of the 2009-10 school year. The highest team GPA in each sport determines the winner. Each of these teams will be honored at the April 27 Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim baseball game in a pre-game ceremony on the field.
Our district’s high schools are in the large school division (1,501 or more students). There are 280 high schools in the large school division that participated in the academic athlete competition. Among those 280 schools, the high schools in the Santa Barbara Secondary School District placed first, second, and eighth.
San Marcos High’s Aaron Solis said, “If you added up the number of first through fifth place schools, San Marcos would be the top school in CIF and Dos Pueblos would be the second school in CIF! This is just as impressive considering many times just a few hundredths or thousandths of a GPA point separate first through fifth place!”
Additionally, several student-athletes were named “Student-Athletes of the Year” by their respective schools. These students are nominated by their respective schools and do not compete against other schools. Recipients of the individual awards must be seniors that have maintained a minimum of a 3.5 GPA (4.0 scale) in college-prep courses over the past three years, in addition to earning a letter in at least one varsity sport and participating in extracurricular activities ( music, drama, service groups, etc.).
Male Student-Athletes of the Year: Matt Welsh (3.97 GPA), San Marcos; Nathaniel Block (3.56 GPA), Dos Pueblos.
Female Student-Athletes of the Year: Jenny Ann Martinez (4.0 GPA) San Marcos; Katherine Boehm (4.0 GPA), Dos Pueblos; Rebecca Nielsen-Robbins (4.0 GPA), Santa Barbara.
