Santa Barbara Junior High (SBJH) has a surf team that competes in the Interscholastic Surf Federation and the students just completed a strong season. There are about 15 kids on the team (7th and 8th grade boys and girls) and they compete against six other junior high/middle school teams from Santa Barbara down to Santa Monica. This year Santa Barbara Junior High’s team took first place in four out of the five contests and second in the other contest.
In boys shortboard, five of SBJH surfers finished the season ranked in the top seven as follows: Dryden Brown, second place; Jack Keough, third place; Foster Campbell, fourth place; Tucker Ingalls, fifth place; and Gabe Grandcolas, seventh place. In boys longboard SBJH had the top two surfers in the Channel League with Evan Trauntvein taking first place and Jack Keough second place. In bodyboard, Tucker Ingalls took first place, Gabe Grandcolas took third, and Daniel Davis finished fifth. Crysta Thompson finished seventh overall in girls longboard. Counselor Todd Fredeen reports, “The kids had their last regular season contest on March 28 at Mandalay Bay in Oxnard and many on the team will be going to the state championships April 24 and 25 at Oceanside Harbor.”
