Roosevelt School encourages families to participate in National TV Turnoff Week

Life without television and other electronics? What would that be like? A number of students will find out beginning Sunday, April 18 through Saturday, April 24. For the last eight years, Roosevelt School has been participating in National TV Turnoff Week. Roosevelt is encouraging families to participate and enjoy spending quality time together. Sixth-grade teacher Wendi Ostroff says that about15 percent of Roosevelt’s population participates and the event generates great conversation about why it's meaningful to take some time to unplug the TV (and electronics) for a week. She shares the following fast facts:

• Children spend more time in front of the TV (1,023 hrs) each year than they do in school (900 hrs).
• Children who watch 6 or more hours of TV per day score significantly lower on reading tests than those who watch one hour or less.
• By age 18, children will have seen more than 200,000 acts of violence on TV.
