La Colina Junior High to celebrate 50 years of academic excellence

On Friday, May 14, La Colina Junior High will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Principal David Ortiz said, “The school opened in September 1959 and has enjoyed many years of excellence including academics, student government, activities, clubs, performing arts, sports and community service. The foundation of La Colina has always been its inclusive school culture and team orientation.” Unique to La Colina has been the school's leadership. There have only been three principals in the history of the school: Jack Richards (1959-1975), Dr. Robert L. Bowen (1975-1997), and David L. Ortiz (1997-current).

To celebrate the anniversary, the school will hold an assembly including a welcome by Mr. Ortiz, patriotic observance, introduction of the districts’ board of education and administrators, Dr. Bowen, retirees, and former ASB presidents. There will be performances by the jazz band and Outburst, the school’s vocal group.

Guests will be able to step back in time when the 1959 school time capsule is unsealed. New items be added to the time capsule for future generations. Dr. Bowen will be honored with a plaque on the front of the library. After the assembly, La Colina Nutrition Services will provide a barbecue lunch, and Santa Barbara Bank & Trust will provide dessert. Retirees, alumni, and the community are invited. Lunch (hamburger or hotdog, potato salad or chips, bottle of water) will be available on an RSVP basis. To RSVP, please call the school at (805) 967-4506 by Wednesday, May 5, 2010. The cost for lunch is $3.25 for students and $3.75 for adults.
