Yesterday was the first day of the Second Annual Poetry Slam in the San Marcos library at lunchtime (12:06 to 12:36 p.m.). Seventeen poets competed with poems covering war, romance, the Slam, and more before a standing-room only audience. Judges were local author Valerie Hobbs along with San Marcos teachers Dovas Zaunius and Jack Hobbs.
Today, Tuesday, April 27, is the semifinals with local poets Lois Klein and Perie Longo and teacher Mike Irwin as judges. The eight semi-finalists had 24 hours to create poems using at least five words from a word bank given to them by Helen Murdoch, San Marcos' teacher librarian.
On Wednesday, April 28 the final three poets will compete, performing poems based on a theme given to them by Ms. Murdoch. Judges for the finals are San Marcos teacher Russell Granger, local musician Ann Talbott, local poet Chryss Yost, and last year's Slam winner, Andre Rhodes.
