The Day of the Teacher is celebrated on the second Wednesday in May in accordance with California legislation and Education Code 37222. According to the California Teachers Association’s website: “’Day of the Teacher’ arose out of legislation co-sponsored by CTA and the Association of Mexican American Educators. Sen. Joseph Montoya (D-El Monte) wrote the bill and it was adopted in 1982 as Senate Bill 1546. California has patterned its celebration after the traditional ‘El Dia del Maestro’ festivities observed in Mexico and other Latin American countries.” The California Education Code indicates that on the Day of the Teacher “…all public schools and educational institutions are encouraged to observe [the day] and to conduct...exercises commemorating and directing attention to teachers and the teaching profession.”
