La Cuesta student artwork will be on display in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s store windows from May 21-28, 2010. Photos and students descriptions of their work will also hang in the museum elevator from May 21 until a date to be determined.
According to the museum’s Tina Villadolid, “Inspired by the exhibition, From India and Beyond, students studied the small-scale Indian terracotta sculptures that reflect a tradition of creating figures in clay in the form of deities and votive figurines for the gods, either to be taken along on a journey or left as an offering. In particular, we discussed Vishnu and his many avatars. The students then designed their own personal avatar, imagining that if they were a deity themselves, what form their avatar would take on.” She continued, “Students created small-scale relief sculptures using terracotta air-drying clay. Learning the technique of relief sculpture - where clay is subtracted, not added - to create the illusion of a 3-D image emerging from the clay, was challenging but ultimately highly successful for the students. The result is a wide array of imaginative and expressive avatars belonging to the La Cuesta and Community Day School students!”
In addition, there will be a celebration of artists from Noon-1:00 p.m. on May 21. Students from La Cuesta, Community Day School, and La Cuesta Dos Pueblos will participate.
