The California State Science Fair results are in and the winners are…

The California State Science Fair is the final science fair of the academic year for students throughout the state in grades 6 – 12. The 59th annual California State Science Fair was held on May 17-18, 2010. This year 960 participants represented 394 schools throughout the state and competed for awards totaling over $50,000.

In addition to student winners from the Santa Barbara Secondary School District, this year Goleta Valley Junior High science teacher Kim Miller won a major fair award:
Calfiornia State Science Fair Teachers of the Year, Junior Division.

Student awards went to:

• Junior Division: Biochemistry/Molecular Biology
• THIRD PLACE: Madeline B. Matthys, grade 8, Goleta Valley Junior High School
• Project: Enzyme Stabilization in Calcified Marine Algae
• Advisor: Mr. Brad Penkala

• Junior Division: Cognitive Science
• SECOND PLACE: Varsha Manjunath, IV, grade 8, Goleta Valley Junior High School
• Project: Detecting Image Forgeries
• Advisor: Mr. Brad Penkala

• Junior Division: Physics and Astronomy
• FOURTH PLACE: Daniel G. Alcantara, Jr., grade 8
• Caylin Canales, grade 8, Goleta Valley Junior High School
• Project: Aging the Stars
• Advisor: Mrs. Kim Miller

• Junior Division: Product Science (Biological)
• FIRST PLACE: Delia M. Bullock, grade 8, Goleta Valley Junior High School
• Project: Sweeten Your Knowledge: The Search for the Perfect Sugar Substitute
• Advisor: Mrs. Kim Miller

• Senior Division: Physics and Astronomy
• FOURTH PLACE: Michael J. Feldman, grade 9, San Marcos High School
• Project: Factors Affecting Gas Diffusion
• Advisor: Dr. Jeffrey Richman
