This year, the districts’ Department of Nutrition Services has replaced Styro-foam in every elementary school cafeteria, in the effort to serve a healthier, scratch-cooked menu on environmentally responsible serviceware. The challenge at secondary schools exists because students consume lunch over a large geographic area and it is difficult to setup composting collection containers. Nutrition Services Director Nancy Weiss says, “Perhaps when the littlest ones learn the rules of composting, it will become second nature and we can really start impacting trash management at our secondary schools.” All serviceware coming from the Mobile Cafés are fully recyclable and compostable. The Department of Nutrition Services continues to convey the message that the Santa Barbara School Districts are taking care of the environment while preparing whole, nourishing food, daily, for breakfast and lunch, to the students of Santa Barbara.
