The school district’s sustainability efforts (pdf) have focused primarily on four approaches: energy usage management; retrofitting of existing products with higher performance products; requiring sustainable, efficient designs for renovations, remodels, and new buildings; and recycling of all possible products.
The district’s Sustainability Council, comprised of the following members, reviews and makes recommendations to the superintendent: David Hetyonk, Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) Facilities and Operations; Carl Mayrose, SBUSD Planning and Construction; Brian Tanguay, SBUSD Purchasing; Jose Caballero, Santa Barbara High School Green Academy; David Ortiz, La Colina Junior High School principal; Caroline David, San Marcos High School student; Emily Redfield, San Marcos High School student; Logan Michaels, Dos Pueblos High School student; Adam Green, Santa Barbara City College assistant professor; Eric Lohela, City of Santa Barbara Environmental Services; Megan Birney, Community Environmental Council; Cecilia Tavera, Southern California Edison; Jim VanOrder, Thompson Naylor Architects; Bob Nisbet, County of Santa Barbara; Karin Perissinotto, Build Green Santa Barbara; Cindy Moore, City of Goleta.
