Update on the 2012 Spirit of Service Awards

Yesterday’s story on Looking Good Santa Barbara’s 2012 Spirit of Service Award should have identified Stephen Criley as a kindergarten teacher. Additionally, the Channel Island Explorers are comprised of a select group of fifth- and sixth-grade students (not just sixth graders).

Sixth-grade teacher Jean Rogers-O-Reilly shared information on another valuable environmental program at Cleveland, “The Creek Kids is a fantastic program which touches on all environmental issues: reusing material and switching to materials which we can reuse (water bottles), composting, not littering so that trash does not go down the storm drain, protecting our wildlife and open spaces. The students gain a true sense of stewardship; we continue this idea of stewardship as we give each sixth-grade student a box from the Living Wise program with low-flow showerheads and energy-saving light bulbs as they learn about all of the energy sources.” Once the sun reappears, her students will be making solar ovens.

Following yesterday’s release of the 2012 Spirit of Service Awards, we learned that our school district has another recipient of this prestigious award: Washington Elementary School’s sixth grade “Paper Nor Plastic” project. We expect to share more information tomorrow.
