Looking Good Santa Barbara will be recognizing Jackie Bluestein’s sixth-grade class and Michael Riley’s fifth-/sixth-grade class at Washington Elementary School for their “Paper Nor Plastic” school project. According to Looking Good Santa Barbara, the students “…approached the single use plastics issue in a very organized fashion. They broke out in to committees for research, publicity, purchasing, etc. and devised a comprehensive campaign to educate the community about the need to switch to reusable bags. They participated in the “Day Without A Bag” event by distributing reusable bags at their neighborhood Albertson’s, they set up a booth at the Farmer’s Market, where they worked on several Saturdays, they collected hundreds of signatures for a petition to eliminate single-use bags from the community, and they created a ‘Paper Nor Plastic’ website. They also appeared during public comment at a February 2012 city council meeting where they made their voices heard in support of their mission.”
Award winners will be honored at the 2012 Spirit of Service Awards Luncheon on Thursday, May 10, 2012, beginning at 11:30 a.m., at the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion, located at 1118 E. Cabrillo Blvd.
